Beryllium Rule Advisory Committee
DOE is convening a Beryllium Rule Advisory
Committee of select DOE employees and contractor employees
with expertise in beryllium operations, representatives
from health professions, physicians, and representatives
from other Federal agencies, private industry and academic
institutions who have expertise in health effects, exposure
monitoring, appropriate controls, and medical monitoring
for beryllium to assist in developing the Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking that would establish a comprehensive
and effective worker health protection program. The
Notice of Intent to Establish a Beryllium Rule Advisory
Committee was published in the Federal
Register on May 23, 1997.
The Beryllium Rule Advisory Committee (members)
will provide the Office of Environment, Safety and Health

22 and 23, 1997, in Oak Ridge, TN, were announced in
the Federal Register Notice
on December 30, 1996. Informal transcriptions were made
of both the Albuquerque and
Oak Ridge forum proceedings.
Request for Written Comments and Scientific Data
The Department urged those individuals
with an interest in beryllium-related activities to
submit written comments and data on this subject. The
Office of Worker Health and Safety prepared a set of
questions covering a variety of beryllium-related topics

written comment period was extended to March 14, 1997,
per Federal Register Notice,
dated February 6, 1997. The comment period is now
